Periodontal Therapy

(Gum Treatment)

Periodontal Therapy involves all procedures that are concerned with the periodontium; that is, the gums, ligaments and bone that surround and support your teeth. As plaque and tartar build up, they lead to gingivitis (mild gum inflammation). Unattended, this condition develops into periodontitis (gum disease), a severe infection that pulls the gums back, wears away the bone, and can even result in tooth loss. Periodontal therapy is crucial for removing infection, preventing bone loss, and establishing a good, healthy base for the teeth. The sooner the better is to maintain your smile and health.

Stages and Types of Periodontal Treatment

The treatment option is selected based on the extent of gum disease, involving either non-surgical deep cleaning or surgery.

Treatment Type What It Involves Purpose
Scaling and Root Planning (SRP) A non-surgical deep cleaning that removes plaque and tartar from above and below the gum line. The tooth roots are smoothed (planed). Eliminates bacteria, allows gums to reattach to the clean tooth surface, and treats early to moderate periodontitis.
Local Antibiotics Medications are placed directly into the gum pockets after SRP. Targets persistent bacteria to enhance healing and reduce pocket depth.
Gum Grafting Surgical procedure where tissue is taken from one area (often the palate) and placed over areas of receding gum line. Covers exposed tooth roots, reduces sensitivity, and improves aesthetics.
Flap Surgery / Pocket Reduction The gums are folded back temporarily to allow for thorough cleaning and reshaping of the damaged bone. Reduces deep gum pockets that trap bacteria, making cleaning easier and halting the progression of disease.

The Vital Key to Good Health

Systemic health is directly related to periodontal health. Diabetes, heart disease, and stroke are some of the conditions that have been attributed to a lack of gum disease treatment. Periodontal therapy, which helps manage the bacterial load in your mouth and reduce inflammation, is a crucial step in ensuring the overall health of your body.
